Dewpond Restoration

Harebells on the field

After our hugely successful Wild Thistle Picnic, where 19 of us turned out in the gentle sunshine to pull up vigorous plants and then enjoy food together, we now have a date for our next work party.

We will meet again on the field on Thursday 31st August at 10.30am where we will work on the very exciting job of restoring the dewpond.

Yorkshire Wildlife trust write: “Dew ponds - sometimes called cloud ponds or mist ponds - are man-made ponds.  They were created in the 18th and 19th centuries to provide water for farm animals.  Despite their magical name, it's thought that the water in the ponds came mainly from rainfall, rather than dew, clouds or mist."

Our own dewpond can be seen on old maps in the 1930s.

So come along with your spade, preferably a light one as it’s heavy work, and help restore a piece of history. Not only that but a wonderful habitat for wildlife.

As the water collects, (and this weather is certainly helping that!) it’s so important that dogs only enjoy the pond from afar. The insecticides in flea treatments can cause terrible harm to any living creatures in the water. Thank you.

There will be lighter jobs too, such as marking wildflower areas and also deadheading some thistles etc. You’ll need a break from full on digging!

So come along, everyone is welcome.

What to bring:

spade
gardening gloves
picnic - bring your own, or bits to share
secateurs
water to drink

We look forward to seeing you there.
