February mulching
8 and 14 Feb 2025
A cold, dank day to be out, but we had a good turnout and an active work party session tackling a variety of jobs. Young saplings were mulched to give them a better chance against the grass growth and to retain the soil moisture near the roots. Other folk planted wildflower seeds on the limestone bank. Near the pond, work continued to sort stone to build a habitat wall for amphibians and move earth for a south-facing burrowing-bee bank.
Excitingly, we were joined by expert ecologist, Ellie Rickman, who gave us some brilliant ideas for surveying plants, birds and small mammals at regular intervals to see how the species change over time. We’re building these surveys into our Management Plan and hope to involve as many volunteers as possible in the counts.
And a wonderful plum cake was devoured at break time!
