Work parties in August

Activity in August:

  • 12 August - Much activity laying the foundations for the wildflower meadow at the top of the field. Fingers crossed that the seed and insects from the Alderwasley green hay settle well in their new home. (See previous post for photos.)

Many thanks to Gavin who has created a wonderful sign for the Bug Hotel!

  • 26 August - A lovely morning with lots of volunteers completing various jobs, including thistle and ragwort management, butterfly transect and labelling the trees in the tree nursery. We continued discussions about how best to retain water in the pond and checked the poles marking the meadow area to be mown in the next week while the weather remains dry.

It was so good to see 40 -50 swallows and house martins swooping over the field enjoying the insects. We also watched a kestrel having what appeared to be a successful hunt, a red kite flew over and we saw a pair of beautiful common blue butterflies.

Oh - and the cake wasn't bad either…!

  • Next work party Saturday 14 September 10am-1pm. All welcome. Please bring drinks and gloves.

  • Please follow our Facebook page or Contact Us to join our WhatsApp group for late-notice volunteer parties.
