Tree planting

9 Nov 2024

During the previous couple of months, we had walked the Field and identified trees which had died off or were looking very weak. We were delighted that this turned out to be quite a small percentage of the 2,500 that were planted last winter. The dead trees were marked with coloured tape for replacement.

A good number of volunteers turned out for our first planting day of the season and we managed to get all 70 dead trees in the new copses replaced with healthy new ones. Conditions were significantly better for planting than the rain and sleet we had the first time around!

We also transplanted one of the new copses entirely - our butterfly transect monitors had noticed it was too close to an area which had been a favourite for butterflies during the summer. We are keen not to disturb their egg-laying area. Many hands quickly made light work of carefully relocating the young trees a few metres to the south.
